The herring king is famous not only for its unusual appearance, but also for legends, and quite scary ones. According to beliefs, it comes to the surface due to the movements of tectonic plates, so its appearance is a harbinger of earthquakes and tsunamis. It is also believed that the one who catches the oar king will be cursed.

Belt fish were found in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. She was nicknamed the herring king due to the fin “crown” on her head, and also because she was met in schools of herring.

Although Japanese folklore says that these long, serpent-like fish emerge from the depths signals earthquakes, seismologist Yoshiaki Orihara says that the association between the two phenomena is hard to prove. That means that the Japanese folklore about these phenomena is just a superstition.
虽然日本民间传说，说这些长得像蛇一样的鱼从海底深处出现是地震的信号，但地震学家Yoshiaki Orihara说，这两种现象之间的联系很难证明。这意味着日本民间关于这些现象的传说只是一种迷信。
