waterworks 常见的意思就是“自来水厂”
注意一下：waterworks本身是单数

在英国，waterworks还是
“（人体的）泌尿系统”的一种礼貌说法

cry your eyes out
就是我们所谓的“痛哭，号啕大哭”
把眼睛都快哭出来了，可想而知这是多悲伤！

tear
fight back tears 是一个很形象地表达
可以理解为“强忍着眼泪”
📚 举个例子
I stood there with a lump in my throat
and tried to fight back tears.
我站在那里，喉咙哽塞，拼命想止住眼泪。
tear up 这种用法主要用在美国
意思是因为情绪激动而眼里含泪，几乎要开始哭泣

She teared up as the award was presented to her.
当奖项授予给她时，她眼里涌起了泪水。

sob
sob的意思是“呜咽，抽泣，抽噎”
📚 举个例子
I found her sobbing in the bedroom
because she'd broken her favourite doll.
我看见她在卧室里抽泣，
因为她弄坏了自己最心爱的娃娃。
常用的短语是 sob your heart out
意思是“哭得很伤心”
