watch表示“看、观看”，dog是狗，watchdog的第一个意思就是字面意思—

如果放在商务英语语境中，更具体地，放到公司治理corporate governance话题里，watchdog又是什么意思呢？
公司内部起到“看门狗”作用——监督、监管的组织，大的企业可能是”监察委员会”，小的是“监察部门”、“监察人”，这也是watchdog的第二个常用义——

牛津：a person or group of people whose job is to check that companies are not doing anything illegal or ignoring people's rights

再来看看dogwatch——
【释义】n. 在船上两小时换班的值班; 从下午四点到六点，或从下午六点到八点
柯林斯：either of two two-hour watches aboard ship, from four to six p.m. or from six to eight p.m
柯林斯词典解释得有点啰嗦，讲人话就是“值夜班”。dogwatch最初是指在船上值夜，那个时间段刚好是（陆地上）除了狗以外其他所有生物都进入沉睡的时刻。
dogwatch在生活中并不常用，当个文化小故事了解下就好了。
想表示夜班，用“night shift”就好，白班则是“day shift"。
