Tea, as a treasure of traditional Chinese
culture, is not only a kind of beverage but also a comprehensive cultural
system integrating philosophy, art, etiquette, and life. Since ancient times,
tea has been closely connected with the daily life of the Chinese people, and
its development process has witnessed the wisdom and aesthetic taste of the
Chinese nation.
According to historical records, the
discovery of tea can be traced back to the Shennong era in 2737 BC. In the
legend, Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs and accidentally ate a kind of leaf,
feeling refreshed and energetic in the mouth and spirit, and this was the
earliest tea. However, tea really became a daily beverage and formed a culture
starting from the Tang Dynasty, especially after the appearance of "The
Classic of Tea" written by Lu Yu. It systematically summarized the
knowledge of tea cultivation, picking, production, and drinking. Lu Yu, known
as the "Sage of Tea", is therefore regarded as the founder of Chinese
tea culture.
Chinese tea is roughly divided into six
categories according to the degree of fermentation: green tea (unfermented),
white tea (slightly fermented), yellow tea (lightly fermented), oolong tea
(semi-fermented), black tea (fully fermented), and dark tea (post-fermented).
The production techniques of each kind of tea are different. From fixation,
rolling, fermentation to drying, each step affects the final flavor and quality
of the tea. For example, green tea retains the most natural aroma and color,
while Pu'er tea, as a representative of dark tea, through long-term
post-fermentation, produces a unique aged aroma and mellow taste.
Tea art is the artistic expression form of
Chinese tea culture, which contains a series of meticulous procedures such as
tea selection, equipment preparation, tea brewing, and drinking. Tea ceremony
is the spiritual core of tea art, emphasizing the realm of "harmony,
respect, purity, and tranquility", and pursuing the purification of the
soul and the improvement of personality. Point tea in the Song Dynasty and tea
brewing in the Ming Dynasty each have their unique aesthetic and philosophical concepts,
reflecting the cultural style in different historical periods.
In China, tea is not only the embodiment of
personal cultivation but also an important part of social activities. Since the
Tang and Song Dynasties, teahouses and tea rooms have become important places
for people to exchange information, negotiate business, and have leisure and
entertainment. Literati often gather with friends over tea and compose poems
while drinking tea, forming a unique "tea and Zen in one" culture. At
the same time, tea etiquette has also become an important way to express
respect and friendship. In weddings, funerals, festivals, and celebrations,
giving tea as a gift has become a custom.
With people's pursuit of a healthy
lifestyle, tea, because of its natural and healthy characteristics, has
received attention and love worldwide. Tea culture tourism, tea art
performances, and international tea culture exchange activities have become increasingly
frequent, promoting the global spread of Chinese tea culture and making it a
bridge connecting the friendship of people in different countries and regions.
