01 hint
非正式语境里用，hint /hɪnt/ 名词或动词，表示“暗示”，可以形容说话时给暗示，或者写作中埋伏笔。

hint about/as to (as to比较正式/书面)
In the first chapter, there is a hint that John is the villain.
约翰是反派在第一章中就有一个伏笔了。

02 foreshadow
书面/正式，或者用于学术讨论，/fɔː(r)ˈʃædəʊ/ 动词，表示to be a sign of something that will happen in the future，预示着某事将会发生。
埋伏笔这种写作手法 (literary device) 叫做foreshadowing。
The poems each character writes foreshadow their tragic fates.
每个人物写的诗都预示着他们的悲剧命运。
The constant reference to rain foreshadowed the big flood that was to come.
反复提到的雨预示着即将到来的大洪水。reference /'refərəns/ 名词，表示“提及”，注意后边介词用to。
I thought all that description of the old house was foreshadowing, but in the end, it was just fluff!
