“无底洞”用英语怎么说?

·1. bottomless pit·
bottom 名词,“底部”,bottomless /ˈbɒtəmləs/ /ˈbɑːtəmləs/ 形容词,表示very deep; seeming to have no bottom or limit,非常深,好像没有底的,无限的。
pit /pɪt/ 名词,表示a large deep hole in the ground,地上又大又深的坑。
bottomless pit是个习语,表示a thing or situation which seems to have no limits or seems never to end,无穷无尽的东西,可以是永远填不满,等于“无底洞”,也可以是永远用不完,取之不尽,用之不竭。
往无底洞里花钱可以说:pour/throw money into a bottomless pit,或者the money goes into a bottomless pit。
We'll be pouring money into a bottomless pit if we try to keep that factory open.
All the money just goes into a bottomless pit. No matter how much we spend, it's never enough to make a difference.
make a difference表示to have an important effect or influence,产生影响和作用。
His debts are a bottomless pit. There's no end in sight.
Our budget is limited. We don't have a bottomless pit of money.
The Internet is a bottomless pit of information.
·2. money pit·
习语,用于非正式语境,表示something on which you keep having to spend a lot of money, especially when it may be a waste of money,这个短语比bottomless pit具体,形容需要人持续花钱去维护和保养的东西,比如说买了个老房子之后一直花钱在处理各种问题,或者一辆车总是出故障要花钱修。
例:The thing about used cars is, even if they're cheap at first, they can turn into money pits once they start breaking down.
We thought the café would be a great investment, but with the rent and repairs, it's just a total money pit now.
·3. throw good money after bad·
习语,表示to waste money by spending more money on something you have already spent money on that is no good,在某个东西上花了钱,结果并不好,不甘心之前花的钱就这么打水漂了,所以继续往里边投钱,试图挽回损失(但大概率不能挽回),有些语境里这个习语会翻译成“在填无底洞,在花冤枉钱”。
例:Trying to fix that old car would just be throwing good money after bad.
Putting more money into that café is just throwing good money after bad. You should just close it down.
close down表示关门、永久停业,也可以说shut down。
·4. 及时止损:cut your losses·
习语,表示to stop doing something that is failing, so that you do not waste any more money, time, or effort,浪费时间精力金钱之后及时止损,不再继续做没有收益的事。
例:Sometimes, it's better to cut your losses than keep fighting a losing battle.
fight a losing battle字面意思是打一场要输掉的仗,表示to try hard to do something when there is no chance that you will succeed,做一件不可能成功的事,没有希望,注定徒劳。
例:After two years of trying to save the café, we decided to cut our losses and shut it down.
