abbreviate /ə'briːvieɪt/ 动词，to make a word, phrase, name or text shorter, especially by leaving out letters or using only the first letter of each word，通过省略部分字母，或者只保留每个单词首字母进行缩写。
常用结构是abbreviate A to B，A is abbreviated to B，把A缩写成B。abbreviate经常用在书面，日常可以用它的同义词shorten，shorten A to B。
例："Daniel" is often abbreviated to "Dan".
Daniel (丹尼尔) 经常被简称为Dan (丹)。
例："Information technology" is usually abbreviated to "IT".
Information technology (信息技术) 经常被缩写成IT。
例："Application" can be shortened to "App".
Application (应用程序) 可以缩写成App。英语里App读作/æp/，不读诶批批。
abbreviation /əˌbriːvi'eɪʃn/ 名词，“缩写”，后边搭配介词of或for，B is the abbreviation for/of A，B是A的缩写。
abbreviation比较长和正式，日常口语可以说B is short for A，或者B is a short form of A，简单一点。
例："Dr" is the abbreviation of "Doctor".
Dr是Doctor (博士) 的缩写。
例："AI" is short for "artificial intelligence".
AI是artificial intelligence (人工智能) 的缩写。
·2. 遇到不懂的缩写·
① What does it mean?
不只是问缩写，遇到不懂的单词都可以用这个提问。
A: What does KPI mean?
KPI是什么意思？
B: Key Performance Indicator.
关键绩效指标。
② What's it short for?
询问全称。
A: Someone left a comment saying TL;DR under my post. What's it short for?
有人在我的帖子下面留言说 TL;DR，是什么意思？
B: Too long; didn't read.
太长了；没看。TL;DR, tldr, tl;dr三种写法都有，看外网帖子经常能看到的一个缩写。
③ What does it stand for?
stand for表示to be an abbreviation or symbol of something，是...的缩写、代表、象征。
A: What does TED stand for?
TED全称是什么？
B: Technology, Entertainment, Design.
技术、娱乐、设计。
④ What's the full form of it?
询问全称。
A: What's the full form of VIP?
VIP的全称是什么？
B: Very important person.
非常重要的人物。
abbreviation是各类缩写通用的说法，根据不同的缩写方式可以再细分，下边3个单词是拓展（概念是我们很熟悉的，但是可能日常用不到）：

acronym /'ækrənɪm/ 名词，指把一个表达里每个单词的首字母合成一个缩略词。
initial /ɪ'nɪʃl/ 形容词，表示at the beginning; first，“开始的，最初的”，也可以作名词，表示“首字母”。initialism /ɪn'ɪʃəlɪzəm/ 名词，表示把单词首字母合成一个缩略词。
acronym和initialism的区别：
acronym是当作一个单词来读，比如TED /'ted/，NATO /'neɪtəʊ/，IELTS /'aɪelts/，TOEFL /'təʊfəl/，UNESCO /juː'neskəʊ/；
initialism是每个字母单独读，比如CCTV，UK，DVD，VIP，但是实际上区分没这么严格，这两种首字母缩略词经常都叫acronym，initialism比较少用。
例：IELTS is an acronym for International English Language Testing System.
IELTS (雅思) 是 International English Language Testing System (国际英语语言测试系统) 的缩写。
例：CCTV is an initialism for "closed-circuit television" or "China Central Television".
CCTV是闭路电视或央视的首字母缩写。circuit /'sɜːkɪt/ 名词，环形的道路；电流线路。

contract /kən'trækt/ 动词，表示to become smaller or narrower，“收缩，缩小”。contraction /kən'trækʃn/ 名词，指单词中间的字母被省略的缩写形式，比如Dr (Doctor)，Mr (Mister)，以及最常见的 don't, won't, I'm, can't, I'll这类缩写。
例："Can't" is a contraction of "cannot".
Can't是cannot的缩写。
例："He's" may be a contraction of "he is" or "he has".
He's是he is或者he has的缩写。
