·1. lazy -
Mary doesn't do well at school. She's smart, but she's just too lazy to study.
I feel so lazy today. I don't feel like getting out of bed.
Get up and make your own breakfast! Don't be so lazy!
We thought we were winning, so we got lazy.
作褒义词后边经常搭配一段时间或者活动,a lazy period of time is spent doing nothing except relaxing,慢悠悠的,没什么事的,悠闲慵懒的。
例:We spent a lazy Sunday on the beach, just lying in the sun and listening to the waves.
它可以作动词,slack或者slack off,表示to make less effort than usual, or to be lazy in your work,做事没有平时那么认真努力,松懈懈怠。
衍生出来的名词是slacker,a person who is lazy and avoids work,懒人,不爱干活的人。
例:He's been slacking off a lot lately—showing up late, missing deadlines. I have a feeling he's about to quit.
We're behind schedule. We can't afford to slack off now!
If you're looking for the slacker in your family, you'll probably find them on the couch watching TV or playing video games.
·3. cut corners -
现在这个习语表示to save time, money, or energy by doing things quickly and not as carefully as you should,为了省钱或者省时间省事,偷工减料、偷懒耍滑,没有踏踏实实做到位,最后出来的结果不好,是个贬义词,经常用在工作、安全、质量保障相关的语境。
例:It's tempting to cut corners when you're on a tight deadline, but it usually backfires.
tempting /ˈtemptɪŋ/ 形容词,很有诱惑力的,backfire /ˌbækˈfaɪə(r)/ 动词,表示to have the opposite effect to the one intended,结果和你想要的是相反的,事与愿违。
例:The accounting department was caught cutting corners, and the boss fired everyone involved.
If you're decorating your home, don't cut corners—cheap paint or rushed work will only make you regret it later.
·4. shortcut -
shortcut /ˈʃɔː(r)tkʌt/ 名词,表示a quicker or shorter way to get somewhere; a quicker way of doing something,去某个地方的近道;也可以表示做某事的快捷省事的方法,这种快捷经常建立在没有把事情做仔细、做规范的基础上,跳过一些不该省的步骤。
常用搭配是a shortcut to sth/doing sth,表示去某地/做某事的捷径,注意这里的to是介词,所以是to doing sth,不是to do sth。
例:I know a shortcut to the zoo; it'll save us at least 15 minutes.
You can take a shortcut through the parking lot to get to school.
There are no real shortcuts to learning a language. It takes time, effort, and practice.
Always wear your protective equipment. No shortcuts.
