Two undersea leaks that began in the Russian-owned Nord Stream gas pipelines were likely caused by powerful underwater explosions. Both the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines showed sudden losses of pressure which could only be caused by a leak from large holes in the pipelines.

Undersea infrastructure can be particularly vulnerable to damage—either from natural causes, such as earthquakes, or physical attacks. Since the Nord Stream pipes burst, huge volumes of gas have poured into the sea, potentially causing an “unprecedented” environmental impact.
