Let's talk about Building Confidence in our today's program.
(The definition of beauty changes at different spatial and temporal scales, but the inner beauty never changes. )
(Skiing builds so much confidence for me.)
(I don't live in the fear of failing because I enjoy the process and love skiing itself.)
(My Mum really valued my choice of freedom at my early age. She didn't want to be a controlling Mum, but she wanted to accompany me to grow up. )
问:What is confidence?
Take the belief that you are valuable, worthwhile, and capable, also known as self-esteem, add in the optimism that comes when you are certain of your abilities, and then empowered by these, act courageously to face a challenge head-on. This is confidence. It turns thoughts into action.
问:where does confidence even come from, I asked myself.
There are several factors that impact confidence.
One, What you're born with, such as your genes.
Two, How you're treated.
Three, the part you have control over.
Tip 1: Try a quick fix.
Picture your success when you're beginning a difficult task.
It can promote feelings of power.
Tip2: Believe in your ability to improve.
If you have a growth mindset and you think your abilities can improve, a challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.
People who have a growth mindset are more successful, geting better grades, and doing better in the face of challenges.
Tip3: Practice failure.
Don't be afraid of failure.
Studies show that those who fail regularly and keep trying anyway are better equipped to respond to challenges and setbacks in a constructive way.
They learn how to try different strategies and ask other for advice and persevere.
The excitement you'll feel knowing that whatever the result, you'll have gained greater knowledge and understanding. This is confidence.

Last night, I watched Eileen Gu's inspiring speech about building confidence. I was totally motivated when she posted on Instagram “Going into my first Olympics, my goal is to simply do my best, enjoy the process, and continue to inspire others and be inspired by this sport and everyone in it” after she became the first Chinese athlete to win gold in the X Games.
I was wondering why she was such a confident girl. Are there any factors that impact her confidence? According to a Ted-Ed Talk, one key factor is what you're born with, your genes. Another is how you're treated. Additionally, it is the part you have control over. These better explain skiing not only builds so much confidence for her, but also serves as a bridge between her and her Mum. It is her Mum who encourages her to improve herself and do better. And it is the way she was brought up to show how confident she is. However, don't forget the fact that she tries so hard to win for herself, not other people.
I learn a lot from this because I know if I begin to change myself, I can be better. For example, every time I want to take on a difficult task, I picture my success in my head because it can promote feelings of power. And, of course, I have a growth mindset instead of a fixed one, so I believe that my abilities can improve. I regard a challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. And most importantly, don’t be afraid of failure because everyone fails. It doesn't matter how many times you fail. JK Rowling was rejected by 12 different publishers before one picked up “Harry Potter”. But it matters how you learn from failure, how you try different strategies and how you equip yourself with responses to challenges and setbacks in a constructive way.
This is confidence Eileen Gu has and this is confidence you can learn from her speech.
“If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away. ”——Henry David Thoreau
