Xiaohua:Let's eat out today! I really want to have Sichuan Hot Pot.
Xiaohong:Yeah, that's cool. Let's go. Spicy food is my favorite. I can't live without spicy food.
Xiaohua:Really? You can't live without chicken, either.
Xiaohong:Alright, here we are! Table for two, please.
Xiaohua:Well, listen up! A new Chinese dish has been burning South Korean taste buds for 4 years. Malatang, or the Chinese spicy hot pot, has been all the rage in South Korea.
Xiaohong:That's true. There's no such a spicy and savory dish with a flavor in typical Korean cuisine.
Xiaohua:Food trends are meant to come and go. But there's something about malatang that is attracting South Korean diners.
Xiaohong:I think it's spicy and stimulating to the diners, so it's very addictive.
Xiaohua:I think the craze will make Koreans go insane. What if they make it their intangible cultural heritage? OMG, it's fridge horror.
Xiaohong:What does that mean?
Xiaohua:It means when something becomes terrifying after the fact.

China's famous spicy hot pot seems to have taken root in South Korea. Many restaurants have been tailoring their menus to meet the growing appetite. This trendy fashion catches the attention of many young people, especially school girls.
Businesses are capitalizing on the craze. For example, local convenience store brand CU offers mala-flavored instant noodles, frozen foods, and pre-made meals.
Local experts suggest the recent boom in Chinese cuisine is because of the increase in cross-border exchanges between the two countries. An example of two cultures bridging the gap through food.
Even though both online and offline demand for mala spice is on the rise for home consumption, one of the problems is what happens when the novelty wears off. And most importantly, what if Korean people make it their intangible cultural heritage?
What we should do maybe is to protect our own originality before Koreans make it their own.
