Avoiding Eye Contact
躲避眼神接触
He was not making eye contact at all during the meeting.
I asked him a question, but he just looked away.
look away 表示转开眼睛,看向别处,转移目光。
Whenever I asked her about it, she wouldn't meet my gaze.
meet sb's gaze /ɡeɪz/ 表示look directly at sb.,直视某人。
It's hard to believe you when you can't even look me in the eye.
look sb. in the eye是习语,经常用于否定句中,表示 (因为撒谎心虚等) 不敢直视某人的眼睛,这个习语里eye不用复数。
如果单纯表示看着某人的眼睛 (和心不心虚没关系),叫look into sb's eyes,eyes用复数,比如He looked into my eyes and told me he loved me.
Fidgeting
各种小动作
fidget /ˈfɪdʒɪt/ 不及物动词,表示to keep moving your body, your hands or your feet,一般指因为无聊或紧张一直不停动来动去,坐立不安,如坐针毡,很多小动作。fidget with sth. 表示不停地拿着某物动来动去。
She was fidgeting with her hair. I could tell she was nervous.
Why are you fidgeting so much? Are you nervous about something?
I could tell he was uncomfortable; he couldn't sit still.
still在这里表示not moving; calm and quiet,sit still (平静地坐着)。
He kept tapping his fingers while we discussed the missing files.
tap /tæp/ 动词,表示“轻敲,轻拍”。
Changing the Subject
转移话题
Every time I asked about the project, she quickly changed the subject.
He kept steering our conversation towards the weather.
steer /stɪə/ 动词,表示“驾驶,控制汽车方向”,在这里表示把谈话转到另一个话题上。
Why does he always avoid talking about the accident?
Over-Explaining
过度解释
over作前缀后边加动词时,over经常表示“过度,超过某个限度”,overreact (反应过度),overeat (吃撑了)。
He's over-explaining everything. I think he's guilty.
You're explaining too much. I don't need all those details.
He went into a long explanation about traffic when I asked why he was late.
go into在这里是begin的意思。
She told me every tiny detail of her day when I asked about her absence.
Being Defensive
防御心理
defensive /dɪˈfensɪv/ 形容词,“防御的,保卫的”,形容人的时候指behaving in a way that shows that you feel that people are criticizing you,感觉别人在批评我们,所以有防御心理的,抵触,为自己辩解,一般会有点凶或者是生气。动词形式是defend。
He got defensive when I asked about the missing money.
I barely said anything, but she snapped at me right away.
snap表示to say something quickly in an angry way,气冲冲地说,snap at sb. 表示很生气地对某人说话。
She raised her voice as if I was blaming her, but I just asked a question.
提高音量,大声地说。
Blushing or Sweating
脸红冒汗
blush /blʌʃ/ 脸红,sweat /swet/ 出汗。
He started sweating as soon as I asked him about his wife.
I could see him wiping his forehead a lot, even though it wasn't hot.
wipe /waɪp/ 动词,“擦拭”,在这里表示擦额头(的汗)。
Every time the topic comes up, she blushes and gets flustered.
flustered /ˈflʌstəd/ 形容词,表示nervous and/or confused, especially because you have a lot to do or are in a hurry,慌张,慌乱。
His face turned red when I asked about the missing files.
Nervous Laughter
尬笑
Nervous laughter is a type of laughter that occurs when you feel anxious, stressed, or uncomfortable. 人在某些紧张不安的情况下会笑,一般是不由自主的。
Her nervous laughter made me think she was hiding something.
He laughed awkwardly when I mentioned the mistake; it seemed strange.
He burst into laughter when the topic came up; it didn't feel right.
提到这个话题时他大笑起来,让我感觉很不对劲。
Making Excuses or Lying
编借口
She said she was busy, but I think it was just an excuse.
Whenever I ask about his work, he quickly makes up an excuse.
He keeps changing his story about where he was last night.
