·01· Don't get too happy/excited (just yet).
not...just yet固定结构,表示not now, but probably soon,现在还不行,但可能很快就可以。
A: We're winning! We're winning! We're going to the finals!
B: Don't get too happy just yet. There's still another game to play, and anything can happen.
A: I can't believe we're almost done!
B: Let's not get too excited. We haven't heard back from the client yet, and you know they always have a ton of last-minute changes.
·02· Don't count your chickens.
Don't count your chickens before they hatch,用于口语,经常省略before they hatch。
表示don't be too confident in anticipating success or good fortune before it is certain,用来提醒别人某件好事还没真正发生之前不要想当然,不要期望太高,别太乐观。
A: I aced the interview last week. I'm looking for an apartment near the office!
ace /eɪs/ 动词,表示to do very well in sth,做得很好,表现很好。
B: Don't count your chickens. You haven't heard back from them yet. Wait for the official offer.
A: I'm booking my ticket to Paris! Everything's all set!
B: Easy there, don't count your chickens. You don't know yet if the boss will approve your time off.
·03· Don't celebrate too soon/just yet.
A: I just finished the poster. The manager said it's good.
B: Don't celebrate too soon. The manager may like it, but the boss may want some changes.
A: I've lost a few pounds this week! At this rate, I'll hit my goal soon.
B: Nice! But don't celebrate just yet. It's easy to gain it back. Let's see how long you can keep it up.
gain it back就是gain the weight back,减掉的肉又长回来了,复胖了。
·04· Don’t jinx it.
这个说法很有意思,jinx /dʒɪŋks/ 动词,表示to bring bad luck in a mysterious way,有点玄学的意思,表示“带来坏运气”。
A: I can't believe we've made it through the week without any overtime!
B: Don't jinx it. It's only Thursday.
A: The score is now 7-1. Looks like an easy win today.
B: Don't jinx it. The game isn't over until that final whistle blows.
